Hængt, skudt, drowned, suffocated

Hængt

Et liv: Shiraz Pir var afghansk asylsøger. Han boede i den engelske by Bristol, og var 25 år, da han den 9. maj i år blev fundet hængt, men stadig i live. Fem dage senere omkom han på hospitalet.

Shiraz havde boet på vandrehjem i Bristol i halvandet år, mens hans asylansøgning blev behandlet. Et halvt år tidligere opnåede mange af hans venner asyl og flyttede, mens hans egen ansøgning blev afvist.

Shiraz blev overladt til sig selv og frygten for udvisning til Afghanistan, hvor to af hans svogre var dræbt af Taliban.

Selv havde Shiraz ar efter at være skudt i benene af Talibanerne.

Han efterlod et brev, hvori han bad om, at hans lig blev udleveret til hans forældre, der lever som flygtninge i Pakistan.

Skudt

To liv: Forud for den internationale flygtningedag den 19. juni, skød sikkerhedsstyrkerne på en gruppe mennesker fra Bangladesh, da de illegalt forsøgte at komme ind i Tyrkiet nær landsbyen Aslanyazi i Yayladag-distriktet (Hatay). Angiveligt ignorerede de advarsler om at stoppe. Sillih Peder på 23 år og 28-årige Cahir (hvis efternavn er ukendt) blev dræbt, mens Musiyar Rahman, Abdurraaf Tazel Islam og Cihlurahman (ukendt efternavn) blev arresteret.

Drowned

Fourteen lives: On 8 October, 14 would-be clandestine immigrants are known to have drowned and another two were reported missing after their duck boat or patera capsized off the coast of Andalucia, close to Barbate (Cadiz). The migrants had chosen a longer and more dangerous route to arrive to Spain in order to avoid detection by the cameras of the new Integrated System of External Vigilance (SIVE).

The known dead were all of sub-saharan origin, including seven women, one of them pregnant, and seven men. It took several days to recover the 14 bodies, the last one having been found on 15 October, that is seven days after the tragedy occurred.

Suffocated

FIVE LIVES: On 11 October, the bodies of five North African migrants were found on top of a cargo of string beans inside a trailer. They had probably suffocated to death, inhaling the toxic gas originating from a fire of the electric cables of the refrigerating system. The migrants were lying in a space of no more than 50 cm between the crates of string beans and the roof of the trailer.

According to the daily »El Pais« (15.10.2002), only one Moroccan press organ, the socialist daily »Liberation« (12.10.2002) reported the tragedy.

The Moroccan-registered lorry to which was annexed the trailer had been stationed at the port of Algeciras for more than 12 hours and it is possible that the deaths occurred before arrival in Spain. The lorry had departed from Agadir and transited through Tanger from where it made the ferry crossing, on its way to Seville.

It was the Moroccan conductor of the lorry himself who notified the state police that the refrigerating system of his trailer had broken down. He claimed to be completely ignorant of the presence of clandestine immigrants in his trailer.

Held in police custody since the macabre discovery, the driver was imprisoned on 13 October, charged with involuntary homicide. This incident was the fourth macabre discovery of bodies of clandestine migrants so far this year.
